Fixed metal braces have been the most common orthodontic treatment for many years because of their durability and highly effective teeth-straightening capability as well as excellent value for money. Metal braces may still be the treatment of choice for many complex cases. Metal braces have improved radically in recent years. Modern metal braces have much smaller brackets and more elastic archwires for improved comfort, appearance and speed of treatment. These appliances can be decorated with coloured ties and are popular with kids and teens.
Modern metal braces can be used to treat the full range of orthodontic problems from simple cases right through to the most complex.
Treatments typically take 9 - 24 months, depending on the complexity of treatment. Our orthodontists can give you a more accurate guide to treatment length at your consultation.
Modern metal braces generate forces that move teeth via brackets that are attached to the teeth with flexible and springy archwires. The archwires are stretched into position and then spring back to their original shape over time, which moves the teeth. Additional forces can be generated with clear elastic chains if required.
1 Consultation. We’ll discover your wishes and develop a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
2 Impressions. Accurate impressions of you teeth are taken. These impressions are used to make study models to plan your tooth movements.
3 Fitting. A specialist orthodontist from the London Smile Ortho team will fit the metal brackets to the outside surfaces of your teeth. The metal archwires create gentle but continuous forces that quickly and comfortably move your teeth into the desired position.
4 Review appointments. You would return for adjustments to the braces typically once every 6-8 weeks. This continues until your teeth are straight. Treatment times vary depending on the degree of crowding and complexity of the case. Then the braces are carefully removed and a retainer is fitted.
